Communication: Breaking Bad News

Common Communication Error:

Disengagement: Operation Room Example 5

 

Sean Aaron, 22 year old male was brought in by the paramedics after he had been injured in a Motor Vehicle Accident. He dies on the table during emergency surgery. His father Sean Aaron Sr. is waiting anxiously outside the OR.

Surgeon: “Mr. Johnson, I am afraid I have some bad news for you. Despite all our efforts we could not save your son. I am so sorry. The crash had fractured his ribs and the broken ribs punctured his lungs. He had also lost a lot of blood in the crash. We did everything we could, but unfortunately could not save him.”

Sean Aaron Sr.: (starts sobbing)

Surgeon: “Sorry.”

Surgeon walks away uncomfortably.

 

What was not addressed: A sensitive approach to the family of the patient.
