a rhythmic change in respirations whereby breathing becomes shallower
with a slowing in the respiratory rate that usually ends with complete
cessation of breathing for several seconds up to over a minute (apnea).
The apnea is followed by progressively stronger and deeper respirations.
It is thought that this is a result of the brainstem responding abnormally
to carbon dioxide levels in the blood-at first undercompensating and then
overcompensating.
